Q I can’t see any signs of slugs or snails so are sawfly attacking my hostas? BELINDA ROGERS, BY EMAIL

A Sawfly don’t affect hostas and the problem is almost certainly caused by slugs or snails. Many slugs spend the day hiding under the soil surface, so may not be obvious unless you hunt for them at night with a torch. Start protecting your hostas early next spring with your preferred method of slug control.
