Sunshine yellows, precious metals, plants in flower now, partners for midsummer magic, a seedhead quiz and September dates for your diary

Nothing sets the pulse racing quite like a sunny yellow border filled with cheerful gold flowers. Just when spring daffodils have become a distant memory, along comes this late summer border full of decorative yellow ‘dinner plate’ dahlias, yellow French marigolds (tagetes), asclepias and spires of golden amaranthus. This is a lively mix of flowers that will work in any late-summer border, in full sun with moist but well-drained soil. White flowers from Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Purity’ and Nicotiana sylvestris help to lighten the mood in the mid-ground, with yellow Shasta daisies and dangling Amaranthus caudatus providing contrast.
