PLANT A BULB LASAGNE

-

For a spectacular long-lasting spring container display, plant a bulb lasagne. Use a long-tom pot or one that’s at least 40cm (16in) deep.

1 PREPARE YOUR POT Check the pot has lots of drainage holes, adding more if necessary, and cover with terracotta crocks to stop compost blocking the holes. Fill with a 6-8cm (2-3in) deep layer of multipurpose compost.

2 BUILD THE LAYERS Position a layer of tulips or daffodils on top, closely together but not touching. Cover with another layer of compost about 5cm (2in) deep and follow with a layer of early-flowering, smaller bulbs, such as narcissus ‘Tête-à-tête’. Leave 2cm (¾in) between each bulb to give the bulbs below room to push through.

3 FINISH THE DISPLAY Cover these with another layer of compost, then add the final layer of smaller bulbs: Iris reticulata, crocus or scilla would all work. Cover with compost, water and place in a sheltered spot, then wait until spring for a vibrant explosion of colour!
