agastache and clematis create a gentle pink and blue scheme

Key plants

1Bold drifts of pink coneflower Echinacea

purpurea (H1.5m/5ft, S45cm/18in) put on a stunning display JuneSeptember. Loved by bees and butterflies and has a good winter silhouette.

2Stately and upright, the blue spires of Agastache

foeniculum (H1m/3ft 3in, S40cm/16in) make a lovely colour contrast for the echinacea, flowering June-Sept in full sun.

3Viticella clematis ‘Venosa Violacea’ (H3m/10ft, S90cm/3ft) looks just as pretty scrambling along the ground as it does climbing an obelisk or shrub. Other clematis here include ‘Nelly Moser’ on the obelisk and ‘Perle d’Azur’ on the pergola.
