When should new ‘Conference’ tree produce blossom?

Q

- KEITH FARM, VIA WEBSITE

AIf you only planted your pear tree last autumn it’s far too early to expect a crop. In fact, had any flowers appeared and fruit set, it would be best to remove them to allow the tree to establish.

Hopefully, this summer it will make new growth, which you can prune in August to shape the tree. Tip back long shoots and prune other shoots to four leaves to encourage flowering. You may get fruit next year but it’s more important to create a good framework of branches in these first few years.
