PROTECT ALPINES AND SUCCULENTS
For climbers trained against a fence or wall, cut sideshoots back by half, maintaining the main framework. If they’ve made long new growth that you want to fill in gaps, bend them down and tie to wires. Cut off diseased stems and clear leaves from the ground.
Although alpines and some succulents are hardy enough to cope with low winter temperatures, they will suffer if their roots stay too damp for too long.
PLACE A CLOCHE OVER POTS
Alpines and succulents growing in terracotta pots can be covered with a cloche. It also helps to raise the pot up onto pot feet (see p36) to allow water to drain away freely.
COVER TROUGHS WITH GLASS OR PERSPEX
The easiest way to protect pans, sinks or troughs is with sheets of glass or perspex. Remove in good weather and to wipe away any build up of condensation.
