Bees and Their Keepers by Lotte Möller (£20, MacLehose Press) Humans depend on bees, given that most of what we eat derives from crops that are pollinated by them.

Not that you’d know it, as we’ve made it so difficult for these insects to survive. Journalist, bee keeper and garden historian Lotte Möller explores our bond with bees, meeting people who are immersed in apiculture all over the world. Beautifully illustrated and written with humour. ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿

My Garden World by Monty Don (£20, Two Roads Books) This autobiographical work draws on decades of Monty Don’s diaries recording the natural year. He says: “If, in our own modest back yards, we can help preserve and treasure our natural world then we will make the world a better place – not just for ourselves but for every living creature.” ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿

Garden Alchemy by Stephanie Rose (£14.99, Cool Springs Press) A hands-on guide for making your own natural plant food, potting soil, compost, organic fertilisers and pest sprays. It reads like a recipe book for the garden and is full of practical advice, clear instructions and step-by-step photos. There are some great gift ideas too, such as making your own seed bombs using paper and clay.
