A‘Carolina Reaper’ is officially the world’s hottest chilli pepper. It needs a longer growing season than other chillies, having been bred for hotness rather than yield or earliness. It’s best to start them off early, ideally under glass. If you grow them in pots you can bring them under cover in autumn to extend the growing season.

Chillies don’t tend to ripen after picking though – if resolutely green, they’ll just shrivel.
