Celeriac
Celeriac produces a large spherical root with a mildly nutty flavour with a touch of celery. New varieties like ‘Monarch’ have smoother roots, which makes it easier to prepare in the kitchen.
How to sow
Sow seeds now in a greenhouse or on the windowsill around 3mm (⅛in) deep in seed compost, water in and seal in a polythene bag. Once the seedlings have developed a good root system, harden off and transplant outside in June.
Where to grow
Celeriac will appreciate a sunny spot with humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil.
How to maintain
Mulching will help to keep the soil moist. Water well, never letting the soil dry out.
