Grow potates in pots on the patio

And enjoy them in summer

-

In many ways, growing potatoes in tubs or growing bags on your patio is the best way to do it. It saves on space, your crop matures earlier into just enough delicious moist, buttery tubers, and they’re easily accessible from the kitchen! It’s great because you don’t need acres of space and you can try growing some tasty varieties that may not be readily available to buy in supermarkets or grocery shops. Blight and slugs will likely pass your potatoes by and you can grow them in any sort of makeshift sack or large trug you like.

There are just a few things to remember: choose early potatoes, such as first early ‘Abbot’ or ‘Arran Pilot’, or second early ‘Jazzy’ or ‘Maris Peer’ so they’ll mature more quickly, and remember to water especially well and feed them through their four-month growing season.

Once you’ve planted them up following the guide below, and foliage begins appearing, earth them up with another layer of compost around them and water again, continuing to do so as the foliage grows, right to the top of the bag. You’re simply gradually excluding as much light as possible from your tubers and giving them more and more room to grow.
