The front of the border is a good position for this strongly-scented pink, 20x30cm (8x12in). Grow in full sun in a welldrained soil.

Viburnum opulus

This shrub grows to 5m (16ft), with maplelike leaves and clusters of creamy-white flowers followed by round, translucent red berries. Thrives in sun or shade.

Lonicera purpusii ‘Winter Beauty’

A hardy, medium-sized shrub with clusters of white, scented flowers from December to March.

Stipa tenuissima

This grass forms compact tufts of yellowgreen leaves topped with soft, feathered plumes of silver-green flowers. Ideal for a gravel garden in full sun.
