Kohlrabi
This round-rooted brassica has a delicious mild, nutty flavour, and can be eaten raw in a crunchy salad, or even steamed. It’s easy to grow and more drought-resistant than most other brassicas.
How to sow
Sow in March indoors at a temperature of around 12-15C (54-59F), or directly into open ground with some protection such as a cloche. You can remove the protection once the frosts have become less frequent, usually around April.
Where to grow
Kohlrabi grows well in a free-draining, slightly alkaline soil with a pH of around 6 in sun, but will cope with dappled shade.
How to maintain
Don’t let soil dry out, and if your soil is poor, consider applying a top dressing of fertiliser, such as a liquid feed of comfrey.
