Start off your asparagus crowns

-

The easiest way to start off asparagus is by planting the crowns now. Dig a trench around 30cm (12in) wide and 20cm (8in) deep and fill the bottom with well-rotted manure, followed by a 5cm (2in) layer of soil. Use the soil you dug up to fill the trench and make a 10cm (4in) high ridge of soil. Place the crowns in a row on the top, spacing them around 30-45cm (12-18in) apart and cover the crowns with soil so that you can just see the bud tips. Water the planted crowns in and mulch with well-rotted manure or garden compost.
