Crops are coming on nicely
I’m growing Rob Smith’s recommended kohlrabi variety called ‘Superschmelz’, which is a gigantic tender and sweet type. It’s said they can grow up to 4.5kg (10lb), so I’d better not grow too many! I’m sowing the seeds in a 12-compartment seed tray of compost, three seeds per compartment. They’ll be thinned to one per compartment later and planted out in late May.
As a break from greenhouse sowing, it’s time to get out on the plot and plant some early-sown crops, which are hardy and big enough to set free. My sweet peas have made bushy plants and are planted out in bunches of two at the base of canes and tied in where necessary.necessar Also, early rly sowings of carrots and beetroot in pots are big enough to go out on the plot, but are protected with a cloche until they’re established.established
I’m delighted the celeriac I sowed four weekswee ago has finally popped throught the surface of the compost!co
