Ideas from the States

- Jane and John Hartley A pretty garden on the south coast of Hampshire with a vegetable patch, stream and woodland.

W e’re away at the moment, but we’re hoping that everything is growing well in our absence!

We’re in Florida currently, but we stopped en route in Atlanta to visit friends, and while there

we visited some gardens (Gibbs Gardens, north of the city) which advertised 20 million daffodils – so we were keen to view this spring spectacle. Unfortunately, the weather has been so good they bloomed early and were over by the time we went! It was still beautiful though, with dogwoods, azaleas, acers and pansies everywhere, and the promise of rhododendrons, hydrangeas and roses to come, all beautifully landscaped, and we could see from the spent daffodils how stunning it would have been if we’d gone a week or so earlier. It really inspired us for when we get back home, as all the other colourful plants will be out in force then.

Maybe we’ll get to see the daffodils there next year – it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area – they’ve the biggest Japanese garden in the USA,

which is stunning. We saw an amazing wooden tree seat there, which is exactly what I want

in our garden so I can sit reading in our woodland! Of course, they can grow

different plants in Georgia than we can in seeing garden many ideas in was one that I think I’ll be copying, a lovely fresh green among the colourful blooms.

Just before we left the UK, we visited our daughter in Teddington, and just down the road, in Bushy Park, we did see ‘a host of golden daffodils’. They were beautiful, so we did get to see some! It was a real wrench to leave our own garden just as it’s springing into life right now but on the other hand, it’s always exciting to see when you get home!
