Adding plenty of organic ma er to clay, sand, chalk or silt soil will improve both water management and crumb structure. Humus will bind silt and make it more robust, while sandy soils become less friable and more fertile, retaining water be er. Chalky soils will perform be er if you dig in lots of compost when planting. After that, mulch, mulch and mulch again! Adding organic ma er to clay makes it more workable and improves drainage. Digging through coarse grit can also help.
