Medwyn Williams grows the best peas for showing

-

Codling moth is the major cause of maggot damage in apples and pears and now’s the time to put up special traps to catch and monitor the male ones. Available from garden centres or mail order suppliers, these open-sided traps contain a pheromone lure that’s similar to the scent of the female moth to attract the male moths. The trapped insects can then be disposed of, thereby reducing the number of fertilised females. Hang the trap at around head height on the windward side of the tree. Beneficial insects are not attracted to the traps so there’s no need to worry about catching these.
