Grow gorgeous grapes

-

Grapevines prosper during years of exceptional weather, when spring passes without frost, and summers are warm, dry and idyllic. By choosing varieties that are suited to our climate, and with the appropriate care, grapevines can be grown triumphantly across the UK!

Grapevines flourish in warm, sheltered locations, in full sunshine, planted in autumn. South-facing slopes are ideal. Avoid compacted or waterlogged soils. Plant grapevines in containers, or directly into well-drained soils. When planting, add compost, wood ash and a generalpurpose fertiliser such as Growmore.

Outdoor grapevines can be trained along walls or fences to cover arches or pergolas. The Guyot system is the most popular method of training grapes – eac each winter the older stems are removed and new growth is tied in. This new growth will fruit the following summer summer. Training, pinching out shoots and thinning fruits is done in summer.

Feed grapevines with tomato feed or similar from early spring, and mulch with manure.

Sweeter grapes can be grown under glass,g where good ventilation is needed to kee keep the plants growing healthily. Grapevines can be grown along the ridge and sides of the conservatory or greenhouse, leaving plenty of room for crops to be grown underneath. Gardeners without a greenhouse or conservatory who desire sweeter grapes can train grapevines along the ground, covering the vine with a lengthy cold frame.
