Food, recycling and wildlife take centre stage at the event
Caring for the environment, people and home-food growing were strong themes at Hampton Court, the world’s largest flower show.
Winner of the best show garden went to The Zoflora and Caudwell Children’s Wild Garden, which showcased the qualities of therapeutic outdoor spaces for children with disabilities. The garden is to be rebuilt at the Caudwell International Children’s Centre, near Stoke-on-Trent.
Best construction award went to the Blind Veterans UK’s It’s All About Community Garden, which championed traditional craftsmanship, as well as celebrating the beneficiaries, volunteers and staff at the charity which supports those who have lost their sight while serving their country.
Striking exhibit Miracle/ Elements Of Life, which explored the world of plant roots and soil, won best conceptual garden. The RHS and the BBC’s Saturday Kitchen programme teamed up to show the diversity of food plants that can be grown in the average domestic garden. TV cooks the Hairy Bikers, Si King and Dave Myers, presented live shows from the venue each day.
