LIFT AND DIVIDE…

-

Congested clumps of plants need dividing approximately every three years to reinvigorate them and give them a bit of space to expand.

Lifting and dividing helps the plant but also means you can propagate these plants at the same time, increasing your plant stock.

Though not an exact science, go by when your plants flower as to when to divide. If it flowers in spring and early summer – such as euphorbias, primulas or geraniums – divide in summer or autumn, but if it flowers in summer and autumn, leave until spring to divide.

How to Dig up the whole rootball of the plant, shake off excess soil and, using two hand forks or two garden forks, prise open the rootball into sections or plantlets. Tough roots may need a spade. Divide into three or four manageable chunks. Smaller, slender-rooted plants may be divided by hand.

Remember If your ground is really wet and boggy, pot up divisions until spring, then plant them out.
