● The buz­zard goes by the nickname ‘tourist ea­gle’. When there were fewer around vis­i­tors to the High­lands would of­ten re­turn home con­vinced that they’d spot­ted a golden ea­gle – when they’d ac­tu­ally seen a buz­zard!

With a wing­span of 1.2m (4ft), a buz­zard does seem big (if you’re more used to watch­ing blue tits). They look the part too; their wings have flight feath­ers that spread like splayed fin­gers and are held straight as the bird rides ther­mals.
