Com­monly called African corn lilies, ixia pro­duce about a dozen six-petalled, star-shaped flow­ers on long, thin, wiry stems above a fan of sword-shaped leaves. They grow to around 50cm (18in) tall and bloom for sev­eral weeks from late spring. Plant in a dry, sunny, shel­tered spot with well-drained soil and pro­vide some cover against win­ter frosts.
