Light climbers for trellis
Trellis provides some degree of visual and physical division but this is cranked up if they’re planted with climbers to make the screen denser. Many will flank a 1.8m (6ft) panel in no time and quickly become top-heavy so it’s best to opt for ‘lighter’ climbers with a li le less growth and weight. Traditional climbing roses work well as long as they’re no taller than 2m (6ft 6in) at maturity. Try dark pink and lightly-veined rose ‘Gloriana’ or pale pink rose ‘A Shropshire Lad’. Another option is Group 3 clematis. These are the types which are pruned to 30cm (1ft) from the ground in late winter, meaning they never get a chance to overwhelm the trellis. C.
viticella ‘Purpurea Plena Elegans’, with its double, dusky purple-red blooms, or
C. viticella ‘Abundance’, with its plethora of red-pink flowers, are ideal. Or opt for an annual climber such as thunbergia, cobaea, or eccremocarpus.
