Koelreuteria paniculata
One of the five official trees that, historically, could be planted as a memorial by a Chinese tomb, koelreuteria works really hard in the garden. The delicate foliage unfurls in spring to be followed by elegant panicles of yellow and orange flowers. The seed heads and autumn colour are also attractive. Prefers a dry soil, lots of sun and doesn’t mind lime. A smallish-spreading specimen, it will eventually reach 8-12m tall (26-40ft).
