One of the five of­fi­cial trees that, his­tor­i­cally, could be planted as a me­mo­rial by a Chi­nese tomb, koel­reuteria works re­ally hard in the gar­den. The del­i­cate fo­liage un­furls in spring to be fol­lowed by el­e­gant pan­i­cles of yel­low and or­ange flow­ers. The seed heads and au­tumn colour are also at­trac­tive. Prefers a dry soil, lots of sun and doesn’t mind lime. A small­ish-spread­ing spec­i­men, it will even­tu­ally reach 8-12m tall (26-40ft).
