Awesome autumn blooms

-

Prunus subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’

Cherry blossom is always a welcome sight, but this prunus bucks the trend by flowering in the colder months! The delicate, semi-double, white or pinkish flowers are produced on and off from November to March, less delicate than they appear. A hardy little tree, it’ll reach 4-8m (13-26ft) tall and prefers reasonably well-drained soil.

Arbutus unedo

Native to the Mediterranean, the strawberry tree produces its creamy-pink bells at the same time as the red fruits ripen. The flowers are borne in clusters, which can be quite large, and contrast nicely with the glossy, evergreen foliage. Arbutus prefers a sheltered site and well-drained soil. Reaching only about 5m (16½ft) in 20 years, young plants are more frost-tender than mature specimens.
