Check water features

Make sure they’re in working order ready for the summer

-

Water features come in all shapes and sizes and are a great way of getting the sight and sound of water into the garden without having to have a pond. Not only are they attractive to look at, but the sound of trickling water can also be very relaxing. And there’s the added bonus that water in the garden attracts wildlife and even the smallest of water features will encourage birds to drink and bathe all year round. Bees and a range of other insects will also be attracted to water and if the water feature is at ground level, it won’t be long before the local frog population finds it, too.

Very often during the winter months water features are turned off, especially in frosty weather to help protect the pump. With very small features it’s a good idea to drain the water and remove the pump, but with larger features the pump can stay in the water and you can continue to enjoy the running water all year round, as long as small pipes don’t freeze.

Now spring’s here, give your water feature a good clean and make sure everything’s working properly, so that you can enjoy it all through the summer months.
