Step by step

1 Sow the seeds in small pots of compost that has been lightly firmed, spacing the seeds out evenly on the surface.

2 Apply a covering of Vermiculite to help retain moisture and warmth around the seeds.

3 Water and place the pots in a propagator, where you can maintain a temperature of 18-20C (64-68F).

4 One advantage of growing from seed is the variety of colours and flavours of tomato that are available.
