How to get an attractive compost bin. Naomi Slade explains

-

With the exception of sweet peas and chillies, I’m cautious about sowing seeds too early. But now the time is upon us. The baby chillies ‘Trinidad Perfume’ and ‘Prairie Fire’ (www.suons.co.uk; www.mr-fothergills.co.uk) are sprouting in the heated propagator and I’m shortly going to sow some coriander, salad leaves and colourful mixed chard.

With veg, it’s worth remembering that members of the brassica tribe, such as rocket, mustard, mizuna and land cress, tend to be prey tolerant of cold and, therefore, an early sowing. Meanwhile, I let tender edibles such as basil and squashes wait until at least mid-April, when warmer temperatures and higher light levels will let them romp away.
