New pest makes an appearance C
otton stringy scale is the latest new pest to pop up in a garden, the RHS has reported. The scale insect, Takahashia japonica was found on an imported magnolia growing in a garden in Berkshire and is distinctive because its egg masses resemble strips of lint wrapped around twigs. Immature scales hatching from eggs can be spread by wind currents.
Although not thought to be problematic, it could become unsightly if the pest starts to breed prolifically. Favourite host plants are thought to be magnolias, mulberries, elders, sycamores and dogwoods. Native to Asia, the insect has spread around the globe and is particularly prevalent in Italy.
If gardeners find it, they’re being asked to contact the RHS to help build a bigger picture of the pest’s presence. The charity advises gardeners to remove infestations by using a stiff brush and water. l Contact gardening advice at rhs.org.uk.
