I'm enjoying the changing colours
Ithink of autumn as being the start of a new gardening year, a time when new plans are discussed and maybe a start made on some of them.
At the same time I really enjoy the changing leaf colours, not only on the trees and shrubs but also on some of the herbaceous plants.
We’ve been hard at work in the vegetable garden, clearing away the remains of the runner beans, harvesting the last carrots and weeding. One of the raised beds is now completely empty of crops and topped up with barrowloads of garden compost. It’s covered with a layer of weed-proof membrane, which will keep weed growth down and also warm the soil ready for an early start in spring.
The strawberry bed has been weeded, runners cut off and replanted in a new bed to increase stocks. I’ve picked the last of the autumn raspberries, along with my canine helper, who found the fruit very tasty!
The scented-leaf pelargoniums in the greenhouse have grown well this year. I’d already taken plenty of cuttings but have taken some more at the same time as cutting the plants back. The greenhouse is unheated but I’ll try and keep the mature plants over winter in there, well wrapped in fleece on cold nights, but the cuttings will overwinter in the house.
Terracotta pots, filled with pelargoniums during the summer, have now been emptied, cleaned out and are waiting to be planted with tulips. I also have 100 allium bulbs to find space for in the already overcrowded borders!
