Lots of time left to enjoy our gardens!

- Garden News Editor

So here we are, in September already! The summer seems to have flown by, even though most of us have been staying at home. What a very strange year this is. But I’m very hopeful that my garden still has a lot to give and I suspect many people will feel the same. My dahlias flowered quite late but are now looking lovely, and as long as they don’t get too battered by the wind, there’s no reason why they won’t keep going. Similarly, the cosmos ‘Kiiro’ I grew from seed have taken their time but are well worth it, with lovely lemony flowers that will go on until the frosts come. From speaking to a few mail order companies and nurseries, it seems that orders have continued to come thick and fast through the whole summer, so there will be several people like me getting some late flowers. Hopefully the nation’s gardens will be a mass of colour for a good while yet!

In this issue we’ve been thinking about a few different things to try, notably with some wonderfully unusual perennials (page 18). There are some absolutely lovely plants that will really stand out in any garden, so do take a look.

Also, why not think about greening up your shed roof (page 22)? It’s a very nifty way to get some extra planting space, but can also be a real boon to your garden wildlife.

Finally, do take the time to have a look at the online Garden News Shop (www.gardennewsshop.co.uk). You’ll find some great bargains as you stock your garden for next year.

Have a great gardening week!
