Time for planting and pruning

- Garden News Editor

There’s so much to do in the garden right now that it’s going to be a very busy few weeks – if it ever stops raining, that is! There’s plenty of planting and pruning to be getting on with, for a start, while the hedge at the bottom of the garden needs some serious attention – I like to leave it until autumn in case of nesting birds but now I need to bite the bullet and tackle it! I shall be planting some garlic too (see our feature on page 22) – it’s such a useful crop in the kitchen and now is the time to get it started. Meanwhile I’ve recently got a cold frame, so (once I’ve assembled it!) I’m looking forward to plenty of other homegrown edibles through the winter months, too. I’d love to know if you’ve got one and your favourite things to grow in it. On page 28, Carol Klein writes about her favourite grasses and (as always!) it’s well worth listening to what she says. I know grasses aren’t for everyone but at this time of year, particularly, they can offer some wonderful structure and interest in the garden, as they waft gracefully in the wind. I definitely think every garden would benefit from some ornamental grass. Speaking of grass, the wet weather has meant I’ve not mown my lawn for a few weeks now and it’s starting to get out of hand! It’d be nice to get in one more decent cut before the frosts arrive... Don’t forget that you can save money by subscribing to Garden News (see below) – it’s great value and the magazine comes direct to your door! Have a great gardening week.
