Keep going right through winter!

-

Well, here we are – it’s December already! For many people, this time of year means the garden is put to bed and left alone for a couple of months. Nothing wrong with that at all, but if I know GN readers, most of you are unable to resist the call of the outdoors – there’s always something to do, isn’t there? And now is a great time to set about a project when the rest of the plot is quiet – why not start work on creating your own rock garden (page 18)? It’ll be a lovely feature and will look great for next summer – and we show you how the easy way! Personally, I am steeling myself for a good ‘sort out’ in the shed at some stage this winter – but while my wife is keen for me to de-clutter, I fear I’m something of a natural hoarder, at least where the shed is concerned!

I have to say I love our feature this week on gorgeous winter pots (page 14). There’s so much that can be done in containers at this time of year to really liven up the patio or doorstep and add some interest – and as garden centres are still open there are worse ways to spend an hour this weekend than investing in a couple of new pots! As we still have time on our hands, getting stuck into some planting feels like one of the more constructive things we can do.

Speaking of constructive, literally, it was lovely to read how Terry Walton’s fellow allotmenteers rallied round to help him put up his new shed (page 31). As I’ve said before, allotments are wonderful places and real communities.

Have a great gardening week!
