Seed-sowing says spring’s on the way

- Garden News Editor

Patience is a virtue, they say, and while like many gardeners I can’t wait to get out and start planting, I’m (mostly) biding my time! However, this week our first free seeds of the year give us all something to do as we look ahead to the summer, when our gardens promise to be a riot of colour and scent. I’m particularly fond of antirrhinum – they seem to flower forever, and the bees love them, too. While it might be more prudent to wait a few weeks I think I’ll get my first few sown now, just so I can feel that spring is around the corner. Look out for free seeds every week until next winter – next week we’re giving away a unique variety of dianthus. One thing I have to point out is that unfortunately, due to Brexit restrictions, we’re currently not able to supply free seeds with magazines in Northern Ireland. On the subject of being patient in the garden, our feature on page 22 is a timely reminder that a cold snap is nothing to worry about in the garden; indeed it should be welcomed. The simple fact that cold weather keeps our pest population in check is quite enough, but it’s very good for the soil too – let’s embrace it! As we get used to lockdown, an interesting view on garden centres has been put forward (page 5). While I was initially delighted to see them remain open in England, is it actually a better idea to close them in quiet January to help ensure they can be open when we really want them in spring? As ever with the pandemic, it’s a very tough call! Have a great gardening week.
