Looking ahead to a summer of lilies!

-

Of all the plants in my garden last year, the lilies put on the most fabulous show. I’m not sure if it was the particularly warm spring but they were incredible. The flowers may be fairly shortlived, but on a warm summer’s day they’re absolutely spectacular. That’s why I was particularly excited about this week’s feature on tree lilies (page 18) – not only are there some amazing varieties to try, but it means we’re really starting to look ahead to those sunny days again! The recent sharp fluctuations in the weather – snow and ice one week, double-figure temperatures the next across most of the country – must have thrown our gardens into a state of confusion, yet they always seem to cope admirably. My one fear, when conditions become mild in February, is that tree blossom may put in its appearance too early and be caught unawares by sharp frosts in March and April. Of course, it’s irrational – there’s not much we can do about it, but we all like to enjoy that show of flowers for as long as possible.

In this issue we also take a look at spring butterflies and the plants we can grow to attract them (page 24). It’s vital we do all we can to assist our butterfly population so do take a look and see what you can do to help.

Meanwhile, I’ve been buying plants again (I call it ‘research’ when my wife rolls her eyes at yet another delivery!). There are some fantastic offers from the mail order companies right now – I got some terrific houseplants from the GN shop (www. gardennewsshop.co.uk) at a bargain price. Have a great gardening week!
