Face of the garden always changes

- Garden News Editor

Afew weeks ago, as I bemoaned the ongoing frosty weather, I mentioned that my apple blossom was looking 5050 at best. The good news is I can report two of the three trees appear to have survived the worst of the weather and have burst into bloom! The third is not quite as happy but still has some flowers, but unfortunately the plum blossom, which appeared first, was finished off almost before it began. Such is life in the garden: hopes realised and dashed almost simultaneously! Last weekend we dismantled a garden playhouse, for which our children had got too big. A wistful moment but it’s created quite a space that can now be put to another use. We may use the hard standing as an extra patio with pots, lift them altogether and plant up the whole area, or put in another structure. The face of the garden is always changing, which is how it should be! In this issue we’ve got some great advice for those who want to create a classy white garden (page 18). It requires some discipline but such an area can really add a touch of elegance – you can do it in just one bed or part of the border, too. As we get back to some sort of normality in our lives, it’s great to read Terry Walton (page 47) reporting that is also the case on the allotment. They are such social places and the communal cuppa is an important element of life on the plot! Things are looking up – it’s getting a little warmer, and we may even get some rain! Have a great gardening week...
