Winners of the RHS photography competition
Aerial garden view scoops top award in RHS photographic competition, reports Ian Hodgson
Astriking aerial view of the intricate Flower Garden at Loseley Park, in Surrey, bagged top award in the annual RHS garden photography competition. Entered into the Gardens category, ‘Spring from the Air’ by Oliver Dixon wowed the judges for its astonishing detail, which used texture, colour and design to give the photo a tapestry-like feel.
Scooping the Overall Young Winner award in the Under 11s category was Jack Sedgwick. His image ‘Fantasy Flowers’ was a clever combination of three photographs taken on a rainy summer’s day at RHS Harlow Carr in Harrogate which the judges loved for its originality, high degree of creativity and experimentation.
Winning image in the new ‘Indoor Gardening’ category was from Tilan Weerasinghe who captured his hobby as a family pursuit during lockdown at home in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The international competition attracted a record number of entries this year.
“The diversity of imagery in this year’s competition has been astounding, with some very creative, unusual, dark, joyful and sometimes humorous work entered. No doubt in some way a response to the pandemic and the lockdown people have endured, but also the introduction of the new ‘Creative’ and ‘Indoor Gardening’ categories giving photographers opportunity to get creative within their own boundaries,” said award-winning photographer and competition judge, Richard Bloom.
