Hardy golden lotus banana
The toughest and hardiest of all the ornamental bananas in the UK. Doesn’t produce fruit but does produce an amazing yellow flower after five to six years. Grow in a large pot in sunny, warm spots. Red abysinnian banana
A new colour addition to architectural foliage bananas. Lovely purple stems and red purple leaf veins and edges in full sun. Leaves reach 75cm long (2½ft) each year. Grow in hot, sunny, warm spots in large pots. Grows 1m (3¼ft) tall or so each year, then dies back. Not winter hardy, so protect from frost. Supplied in a 1 litre pot.

Japanese banana
Fan-like leaves spreading out through the air will create wonderful shadows on your patio. It loves sunshine but is hardy to -6C (21F) when protected. Brilliant if planted in a large pot. Supplied in a 1 litre pot from 30cm (1ft) tall, but growing quickly in summer so may be taller. This plant will not produce fruits.
