Deep shade

-

Less than two hours of direct sunlight a day, to no direct sun Where: Under dense tree cover or below overhanging buildings or walls.

Best veg to grow: Oriental leaves, such as mizuna and mibuna, mustard, Chinese cabbage, mint and pea shoots. What you’ll get: This is the darkest, trickiest spot. Few crops can cope, and most will be spindly and susceptible to disease. Do what you can to lessen the shade. You will get small harvests of leaves – keep picking, and sowing, for continuous supplies. Choose green rather than the colouredleaf varieties, which need more sun, and choose robust varieties of mint, like ‘Tashkent’, that are less prone to rust.
