Partial shade

-

Three to six hours a day of sunlight in midsummer

Where: Spots that are in full sun for part of the day.

Best veg to grow: All of the veg mentioned in ‘dappled shade’, plus radish, beetroot, carrots, potatoes, mange tout and sugar snap peas, French, dwarf and runner beans, courgettes and winter squash.

What you’ll get: Fruiting crops, such as courgette, will be less productive if having to grow with fewer hours of sunlight but, as it can be hard to keep up with their continuous harvest, that can be an advantage! Wait to sow root veg – such as carrots and beetroot – until mid to late spring, when the days are longer, brighter and promote better growth.
