Check and adjust tree ties
WINTER STORMS often cause trees to sway vigorously, even if they’re held in place by a sturdy stake and tree tie. Over time, this can gradually loosen the tie. The tree can then start to rub against the stake, damaging the bark. So check any tree ties regularly over winter, making them snug but not tight if they’ve become loose, so the stem is held firmly in place. The roots of most trees will be established sufficiently for the tie and stake to be removed after a couple of years.
