What is this rapidly spreading weed?

- Alan Griffiths, Anglesey

ABUNNY SAYS have this plant too – it’s Soleirolia soleirolii, better known as mind-your-ownbusiness, baby’s tears or the Corsican curse, among others. I used it to frame stepping-stone paths in a Wind in the Willows garden at Chelsea and took a few plants home afterwards. Some 34 years later, I have a fair bit of it – too much, but I still like it! When it spreads into borders I spot treat it with glyphosate. If you don’t want to use chemicals, cover it with a thick mulch and/or weed it out regularly. It’s more problematic in a lawn, as it’s resistant to all selective broadleaf weedkillers. Hand weed or lightly scarify, or carefully spot treat with Scotts Roundup Gel.
