Mirrors are a simple way to make a small space look bigger, fooling the eye into thinking there is something beyond and reflecting light and points of interest in the garden. Hiding the edges with plants will further help to perpetuate the illusion. Acrylic mirrors are lighter and cheaper than glass. Or look out for old mirrors in junk shops – their distressed, mottled appearance can be very effective. To reduce the risk of birds being tricked by mirrors, use smaller mirrors and place airy transparent plants or trellis in front.
