Give cacti a new lease of life

-

ALTHOUGH CACTI can be tricky to handle, once in a new pot they can stay there for several years. Fill the new pot to 1cm below the rim with a free-draining mix of John Innes No.2 compost and grit, then make a hole in the centre. Using tweezers and an old spoon, scoop the cactus, along with its mass of shallow roots, out of the old pot and sit it in the hole, at the same level as previously. Cover the compost with a thick layer of grit, then water well to settle the roots.
