Growing tomatoes

-

It couldn’t be easier to grow your own tasty tomatoes, on hand for easy picking. The plants are frost tender, so plant them out towards the end of this month or earlier if you plan to grow them in the greenhouse. There are several types: cherry tomatoes and tumbling basket cultivars are real sweeties, impressive beef tomatoes are sliced into salads, and vigorous Italian plum cultivars are perfect for cooking. If you can train the plant into a tall cordon there is a huge choice of cultivars. There are fewer of the really easy compact bush tomatoes, which need a bit of support but no training. Choose the sunniest spot in your garden and make sure you have a cane for each plant and some string. Buy a bottle of liquid tomato feed to keep plants healthy. There might be a few whitefly towards the end of the season, but mostly these plants will be trouble-free.
