Q What has happened to my broccoli?

A PIPPA SAYS There are a number of reasons that broccoli can exhibit this symptom, usually called ‘blindness’. If the growing tips of the plants are injured, the head of sprouts may not form as they should. Blindness is often caused by physical injury, such as rough handling, insect attack or cold temperatures. Research suggests that low light levels and day length can also play a part. Blindness can also be initiated when the broccoli is a seedling/ young plant and when it is growing in your garden. So, it can be very hard to be sure exactly what caused the blindness in any one case, or even when the damage was done. But don’t give up. Instead, sow more plants and try to do everything you can to prevent damage, including making sure the plants have plenty of light and moisture.
