How can I get my passion flower to bloom?

- Diana Priest, East Anglia

CHRISTINE SAYS If you have a very fertile clay soil or a plot where you have incorporated well-rotted compost or manure at planting time, this may be encouraging foliage growth at the expense of flowers. The same result happens if the plant is subjected to too much shade. If your plant is in a west-facing position, early frost may kill the developing buds; try a southfacing one instead. Try also feeding the plant in June with a good handful of sulphate of potash. Ensure that this is hoed into the surface of the soil, being careful not to damage surface roots, and water in the feed if rain does not fall within a week of application.
