Repair your lawn edges

-

Make good any damage to the lawn now. Lawn edges can get shaded from plants in the border spilling over and causing the grass to die underneath. Sometimes the edges also drop down and go bare from foot traffic. Repair them now while the ground is still warm and seed can germinate quickly. The newly seeded patches will quickly blend in with the rest of the grass. Turf will also root in well before winter.

1 REMOVE the strip of damaged turf on the edge and lift a large piece from behind it of the same width. Use a half-moon edging iron to cut it and a spade to lift it.

2 CUT the undamaged turf into shape, if necessary. Turn it around 180° and place it so the straightest edge aligns with the soil edge.

3 ADD soil to build up the level in the gap that will have formed in the lawn and tamp it down level with the rest of the lawn.

4 MIX the lawn seed in its box before sprinkling a handful over the bare soil in the gap. Water gently and cover with netting until it has germinated.
