Under shrubs

-

The dry conditions under shrubs, or at the base of hedges, make good growing conditions for many bulbs as long as you feed them. Tulips, particularly species tulips, will be very content on the sunny side of a hedge. Once established they can be left undisturbed for years. The Tulipasylvestris that sits happily under the apple trees and nut hedge in my garden must have been planted a good few years ago. Close by there are carpets of bluebells – with their magical sweet scent and blue haze – flowering throughout the months of April and May.
