A member of the brassica family, calabrese is commonly known as broccoli, which can cause confusion with white- or purple-sprouting broccoli: these have small heads and longer stems, whereas calabrese has large heads of bluish-green flower buds, known as ‘beads’. The name is derived from its place of origin, Calabria in Italy.
